#nfcdab Düsseldorf 2018

Near-Field Communication Digital Art Biennale
10. – 11. November 2018,
in front of NRW-Forum Düsseldorf, Germany

#nfcdab is a DIY or DIWO? digital art biennale that travels on wireless technologies, light waves and electromagnetic fields e.g.: Wi-Fi routers, QR codes or NFC tags to access content. the idea of the biennale is to take advantage of the potential of near-field (mis)communication and other sharing technologies for making web-based digital art accessible in outdoors settings. it slack-keeps presence next to the frameworks of galleries and institutions.

#nfcdab 2018 is a multi-centered, travelling biennale which takes place in Gol(NO), Warsaw, Wroclaw(PL), Amsterdam(NL), Valencia(ES), Düsseldorf (GE) and possibly Prague(CZ), Berlin (DE), Athens(GR) throughout 2018.

#nfcdab Düsseldorf is taking place Saturday 10rd and Sunday 11th of November 2018.
The biennale uses public space as its platform for exhibition:
– Planter exhibition of 85 works at Parque de la Cultura (MUVIM park). Media: visual-, video-, web-, network-, essay-, performance-, installation-, descriptive-, imaginary-, simulated-, dissimulated-, sound-, site-specific-, land-, phenomenological-, game-, personal satelite radio system broadcast-, spam-, chatbot-, and other arts. The digital works are accessed through QR codes on smartphone and tablet.

about

this is the 3rd near-field communication digital art biennale (#nfcdab) dealing with work that use and interact with P2P (peer-to-peer) dynamic and distributed form of electromagnetic, light and wireless technology standards.

#nfcdab has so far travelled from Gol(NO) via Warsaw, Wroclaw(PL), Amsterdam(NL) to Valencia(ES) – forming a sort of questionmark on the map, from inter-rogation points, of where it’s at??

technology
NFC tags, QR codes, modified routers, 2 categories of sensors: A. embedded human sensory pack; B. sensors in mobile devices.

forms of exhibition
– planters in urban public space, possibly in combination with piratebox router and offline content.
– on map as join-the-dots instant exhibition catalogue from locations.
– ambulating show and tagging; android piratebox and physical tagging; on folder-map as code-poems using what3words (3 words as location).
– improvised and combined formulations of these, eg. superimposing a mapping of a work onto an area in the surroundings.

suggestive description of the biennale
– contextual, parasitic, virtual, imaginary, descriptive, phenomenological, mapping art.
– parasitic on art context and on human perception.
– a focus on the relation between inert physical objects and their virtual counterpart in a broad sense being objects of our perception – coming alive, activated by innate or prostetic sensors.
– the works can be textual descriptions of possible or impossible artworks for the locations. invert works to ‚prompts‘ for activating the subject ‚in place of the work‘.
– alternative mapping strategies between physical and virtual.
– how the tech can be used to invert modes of exhibition and perception.
– people can act like sensors, works can be prompts – an activation of your innate senses.
– descriptive art, the code-tag can act as a prompt for people to write, to email, web or nfc message board.
– a description of a virtual artwork, imaginary works of art in certain locations, or reinterpretation of a real (or virtual!) work at site.
– hybrid object, virtual-real, the tag refers to its virtual counter-part, complement/undermine/commenting it.
– an object’s memory, available to the decoder, and collected by (mail/web/nfcboard).
– virtual graffiti, a camera obscura – creating of an inverted virtual-physical space.
– roaming, walking, tagging, flaneur bricolage.
– content playable or bricked on mobile, portable devices, human senses and imagination.
– interventions and tripwires.
